Lower School Music
The Lower School music program includes singing, playing, moving, listening, and creating, all of which encourages students to recognize and respond to their own inherent musical natures. Students learn about different cultures by singing songs from around the world and from our own country. Third and fourth graders begin an in-depth application of what they have learned in music when they begin playing recorders. In the fifth and sixth grades, students take the application a step further by learning to play the harmonica. Opportunities for group and individual student performances are available throughout the school year.
Middle School Music
In Middle School, students may choose to take either Instrumental Band or Choir. Middle School choir covers the basic elements of vocal production and music theory as well as sight-reading and performance skills. Middle school students also study composers and world music in depth, and even try their hands at composing.
Middle School Band
Middle School students learn the basics of reading music through and perform as members of the Band. All students are placed on an instrument (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, or drums/bells) and taught basic tone production and fingering on those instruments. In addition to learning how to play a musical instrument, students learn cooperation and the discipline of regular practice. The Grace Band performs several times throughout the year.
Grace has partnered with local musicians in our community to allow parents to arrange for private guitar, voice, and piano lessons to our students during school hours. The music teachers come to our school and take students out of either P.E. or recess to provide a half-hour, private music lesson.
